My story:
Tank came to me just after completing his transformation from a tadpole. His tail had only recently been absorbed and his four new legs had developed, making him scarcely more than a newly transformed froglet.
Since then, Tank has grown into an absolute eating machine. He can swallow a meal weighing almost half as much as he does in a single sitting! Although he devours all kinds of bugs, his very favourite foods are adult mice and chicks, which he gobbles down with astonishing enthusiasm.
Tank is essentially a stomach with legs. As a natural ambush predator, he sees no reason to waste energy wandering around unnecessarily. Instead, he sits almost perfectly still, wearing the intensely serious expression of a criminal mastermind preparing to take over the world, while waiting for something edible to wander past.
Every so often, Tank launches himself into his pond for a leisurely swim—usually followed by an absolutely enormous poo. He may not be the most active member of Wriggly Roadshow, but he is unquestionably one of the biggest characters!
DId you know?
Male African bullfrogs are among the amphibian world’s most formidable fathers. A male will remain beside a nursery pool, aggressively guarding thousands of tadpoles against predators.
If the shallow pool begins drying out, he can use his enormous head and powerful back legs to excavate a channel leading to deeper water. Water flows through the newly constructed canal, allowing his tadpoles to swim away from their disappearing pool and reach safety.
