My story:
Twitch is a female Laos forest scorpion who has successfully produced three litters of babies. She is an exceptionally attentive mother, carefully carrying her tiny white newborns on her back and protecting them while their delicate new exoskeletons develop.
However, motherhood has certainly not softened Twitch’s formidable personality! She is intelligent, unpredictable and overflowing with sass. One moment she may appear perfectly calm and tolerant; the next, her tail can curl forward and she may deliver a painful sting. Working with Twitch means constantly observing her behaviour and never assuming that yesterday’s calm mood guarantees the same response today.
For that reason, Twitch is strictly a display-only animal. Members of the public are never permitted to touch or hold her, and any essential handling is carried out only by me with appropriate care. She is a wonderful example of an animal that can be admired, respected and enjoyed without needing to be touched.
Twitch may not always be trustworthy, but she is full of character and remains one of the most fascinating and entertaining animals in the entire Wriggly Roadshow collection.
DId you know?
Some scorpions can hunt almost entirely by “listening” through their feet! Special vibration detectors in all eight legs register the tiny waves produced by an insect walking across the ground.
The scorpion compares exactly when the vibration reaches each foot—detecting differences as small as 0.2 milliseconds. Its nervous system then calculates the direction of the disturbance, effectively turning its eight legs into a living seismic-detection system. Some scorpions can accurately locate prey from around 20 centimetres away without needing to see it.
